UK report identifies litter & street cleaning problems
Keep Britain Tidy, the group responsible for monitoring the cleanliness our streets has identified smoking materials, confectionary waste and dog fouling as residual problems.
The conclusion of the recently released 2008/9 survey is that although overall levels are slightly down on previous years, these three contribute significantly.
The report says "As always, smokers’ materials (cigarette butts, matches and packaging) remain the biggest blight on our streets but there has been a small decline in their presence and it is heartening to see other types of litter such as confectionary packaging (chocolate bar wrappers) and snack packaging (crisp packets) and fast food rubbish showing a slight decline too".
The survey also identifies a reversal in previous improvements in dog fouling and suggests that this is due to a lack of dog waste bins in key locations. The report says "we are now starting to see bagged dog waste left either in the ground or hanging in trees and bushes. It appears that although the message about cleaning up dog mess is having a significant impact, if there isn’t a bin to hand, people are discarding the bagged dog waste immediately rather than taking it home".
LINPAC Environmental manufacture a wide range of litter bins, containers and street furniture suitable for key public areas including high streets, parks, schools, leisure centres, bus stops and lay-bys. These include freestanding hooded and open top bins as well as post mounted waste bins and dog waste bins.
